Syllabi Collection for Teaching the Bible

Studies
SBL member and SMU faculty member Mark Chancey has completed a study of Bible courses in Texas public high schools for the Texas Freedom Network. In 2007 the Texas legislature passed a bill that required public high schools to include some treatment of the Bible and its influence in their courses. This thorough study reveals the pressing problems related to teacher training, curricular development, and religious bias. You can read the full or abridged report here.

Bible Electives in Public Schools: A Guide can now be viewed on-line (8.55MB) or print copies ordered by e-mailing Moira Bucciarelli. Mac users will need to view the pdf in Acrobat Reader, not Preview.

SBL works with many different organizations and institutions to enrich and broaden the spectrum of resources that the Society can offer members. It worked closely with the Coalition on the Academic Workforce (CAW) to produce A Portrait of Part-Time Faculty Members, which provided data critical to our work in SBL. Equally critical are data from a new study by the Delphi Project on the Changing Faculty and Student Success that concern the impact of contingent working conditions on student learning outcomes. Download the data report and read some of the press coverage. SBL also annually publishes a report in cooperation with AAR on the job advertisement data the organizations collect. Download the 2001-2010 report here.
