Planning your Meeting:
Session Guides are in the mail to all SBL members. For updated information, use the online Program Book until you receive your printed Program Book in Atlanta.
All sessions will be held at the Atlanta Marriott Marquis and the Atlanta Hyatt Regency, two downtown hotels across the street from one another.
The Career Center will be in the Hyatt Regency.
Registration for the meeting is on the Marquis level at the Atlanta Marriott. If you do not receive a name badge in the mail, pick up your badge at the SBL registration desk. Those with name badges may take the tote bag ticket directly to the bag distribution window. Your tote bag will contain the Program Book with room numbers for all sessions and hotel floor plans.
The Book Exhibit Hall
The Exhibit Hall will be in the Marquis Ballroom and the Imperial Ballroom on the Marquis level at the Marriott. Plan your Exhibit Hall Strategy! Click here for hours and booth numbers.
Hotel Reservations
SBL has reserved a large block of rooms for members in both the Marriott Marquis and Hyatt Regency, our co-headquarter hotels. Did you know that hotels offer SBL reduced prices for session meeting space if a large percentage of our members stay in the conference hotels? If you make a reservation at the Hyatt or Marriott, you will enjoy the camaraderie of SBL members and help keep costs down. Many members find colleagues to share a room and save money by dividing the cost.

Click here for a Google map that shows nearby restaurants and sites of interest. The conference hotels are connected by bridges to Peachtree Center, a downtown mall with restaurants, shops, and a convenient MARTA subway station.
Centennial Olympic Park is an easy walk and several restaurants and sites of interest are located around the Park.
Floor plans of the hotels will be printed in the Program Book distributed on site.

Five tours are available to registrants and accompanying family members who would like to learn more about Atlanta’s history and see the city. Click here to download tour information. Tour reservations may also be made during online registration.
Getting to the Conference
All flights into Atlanta arrive at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport which is south of the city. You may ride the MARTA subway train from the Airport to Peachtree Center station, right next to the conference hotels, by purchasing a Marta Breeze ticket at the airport MARTA station near baggage claim. The ride costs $2 one way. The city also offers shuttle service to downtown hotels. You may catch the shuttle next to the taxi stand outside baggage claim. Shuttles depart every 15 minutes for downtown hotels. The cost is $16.50 one way or $29 round trip. Taxis are available as well. One way to a downtown hotel generally costs between $30 and $40.

What is Bible? (S22-149)

Terms like “Bible” and “biblical” dominate scholarly publications, but are the terms appropriate? Following the summer 2010 international symposium organized by SBL and the Universities of Koblenz-Landau and Vienna, this session furthers discussion of the historical and philosophical dimensions of the term Bible from both a Jewish and a Christian perspective.
The Bible and Haiti: Reading and Re-Reading before and after the 2010 Earthquake (S21-145)

The aim of this session is to present an ethno-culturally rooted methodology of biblical interpretation, as it relates to Haiti’s past and present. In other words, what this session hopes to accomplish is to situate the Bible in the complex phenomena of discourses, myths, ideologies, and practices in the struggles for freedom and dignity the Haitians have fought throughout their history to the present.

Sponsored by the Center for Global Theologies, Wartburg Theological Seminary, this session involves a viewing and discussion of the film Son of Man (2006), which was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize in World Cinema, Sundance Festival 2006. The film's director, Mark Dornford-May, will be present to discuss his film.
Five Unpublished Dead Sea Scroll Fragments Acquired by Azusa Pacific University (S22-223)

This session will present on five small scriptural Dead Sea Scroll fragments, purchased by Azusa Pacific University, that in 2009 APU scholars began analyzing and readying for publication with James Charlesworth. Apparently copied during or near the century 50 BCE-50 CE, the fragments include four in Hebrew from the Pentateuch (unidentified Torah fragment, Leviticus 10:4–7, Deuteronomy 8:2–5, Deuteronomy 27:4–6) and one from the Aramaic portion of the book of Daniel (5:13–16).
E-Publish or Perish? (S21-314)

Enthusiasm for electronic scholarship, like the technology that enables it, seems destined to grow exponentially into the foreseeable future. To help scholars and students navigate this dense and ever-shifting landscape, SBL Publications is sponsoring a special session on the challenges and opportunities presented by e-publishing. In this overview, panelists with hands-on electronic publishing experience discuss some of the open-access forms that e-publishing may take, including monograph series, online journals, blogs, and online resources, then answer questions from the audience.
Navigating the Job Market (S22-131)
