for a tenure-track assistant professor in the field of Islam and Muslim
Societies in sub-Saharan Africa, to begin August 2007. The position is open
as to academic discipline. We are interested in candidates with a research focus
in such fields as Muslim thought, religious practice, Islamic history, social
dynamics, and/or political movements. The appointment will be made jointly
between the Center and a relevant disciplinary department within the College of
Liberal Arts & Sciences. Required qualifications: Ph.D. in relevant field;
significant research experience in sub-Saharan Africa; strong record or
substantial promise of teaching and scholarly publication on Islam in Africa.
Candidates should demonstrate an ability to work collaboratively across
disciplinary boundaries with faculty members in various departments and
colleges. Knowledge of African language is also desirable. The UF Center for
African Studies (CAS) is a federally-funded Title VI National Resource Center.
CAS draws on some 100 faculty affiliates to create university-wide programs
related to Africa and cooperate with various units across the campus. CAS
international relationships extend to universities and programs across Africa,
including active institutional linkages in Botswana, Nigeria, Senegal, South
Africa, Tanzania, and Uganda. University of Florida, a member of the Association
of American Universities, is a comprehensive public research university
encompassing virtually all academic and professional disciplines. Its beautiful
2000-acre campus is located within the city of Gainesville, a diverse community
