The International Association for the History of Religions Membership

The Society of Biblical Literature has been invited by the International Association for the History of Religions (IAHR) to join its ranks as an Affiliate member. IAHR Affiliates are "international associations for the study of particular areas within the academic study of religions.” Tim Jensen (Honorarprofessor Leibniz Universität Hannover, Associate Professor of the Study of Religions at the University of Southern Denmark, and President of the IAHR), said of the SBL, “The IAHR extends this invitation because SBL is the largest international association of religion scholars with expertise in critical textual analysis. SBL brings a unique scholarly skill set to IAHR.” John F. Kutsko (Executive Director of SBL) likewise expressed that “SBL’s intellectual contribution to the humanistic study of religion through its close reading of religious texts in their many contexts, past and present, creates opportunities for international and interdisciplinary collaboration. We imagine many ways to engage with the international scholarly community of the IAHR.”

A History of Ancient Near Eastern Law

This SBL Press reprint of Brill's two-volume comprehensive survey of the world's oldest known legal systems, is a collaborative work of twenty-two scholars that covers more than 3,000 years of legal history of the ancient Near East. Each of the book's chapters represents a review of the law of a particular period and region. The chapters are arranged chronologically by millennium and within each millennium by the three major politico-cultural spheres of the region: Egypt, Mesopotamia, and Anatolia and the Levant. An introduction by the editor discusses the general character of ancient Near Eastern Law.
