SBL Annual Meeting Registration

While things will look a little different this year as we all absorb and adjust to new realities brought on by COVID-19, we’re excited to announce that registration will be open May 14 for the SBL Annual Meeting 2020 which will be held November 21-24 at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston, MA. We are aware of the uncertainty projections related to the COVID-19 pandemic and with health and safety as a priority, we will continue monitoring the guidance of governments and health experts as we plan and make decisions. Should any changes need to be made related to the 2020 Annual Meeting, we will promptly notify you. Please go here for more information from the SBL Council.

An email with a link to register will be sent to all SBL members once the registration site is available on May 14.  To register you will need your membership number, contact information, arrival/departure dates for hotel accommodations and a credit card.
Some things to note regarding registration this year:

  • If you cancel your registration by October 21, you will receive a full refund of your registration fees.  Your hotel reservation can also be cancelled without a penalty if received by October 21.  When booking transportation (flights, trains, etc.) we recommend that you check all cancellation policies and related fees.  Details on U.S. travel restrictions can be found on the U.S. Department of State website.
  • There isn’t one specific headquarters hotel this year. SBL sessions will be held primarily in the Hynes Convention Center, and surrounding hotels.  The Book Exhibits will be held at the Hynes Convention Center. The Employment Center will be located at the Boston Park Plaza. We will update our website with additional information about the meeting as it becomes available.
  • You can book your Early Bird rate until June 11, so take advantage of the discount and register as soon as possible.

The Birth of Doubt: Confronting Uncertainty in Early Rabbinic Literature
Moshe Halbertal

In the history of halakhah, the treatment of uncertainty became one of the most complex fields of intense study. In his latest book, Moshe Halbertal focuses on examining the point of origin of the study of uncertainty in early rabbinic literature, including the Mishnah, Tosefta, and halakhic midrashim. Halbertal explores instructions concerning how to behave in situations of uncertainty ranging from matters of ritual purity, to lineage and marriage, to monetary law, and to the laws of forbidden foods. This examination of the rules of uncertainty reveals that these rules were not aimed at avoiding but rather at dwelling in the midst of uncertainty.
