SBL is a signatory to the Middle Eastern Studies Association (MESA) Board’s statement on Florida bill HB233. Bill HB233 permits students to record in classrooms without obtaining instructor consent. John Kutsko Appointed to the Executive Committee of the CEO of ACLS

We are pleased to announce the election of the SBL executive director, John Kutsko, to Chair of the Executive Committee of the Conference of Executive Officers (CEO) for the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS). As chair, John will also serve ex officio as a member of the ACLS Board of Directors. Congratulations, John on this amazing opportunity!

Call for Papers

Save Ancient Studies Alliance has partnered with Digital Hammurabi to create a new type of online conference for ALL Ancient Studies scholars, scheduled for Sunday - Monday, 15-16 August 2021. 

We aim to bring together scholars who do not normally have the opportunity to present and engage with scholarship, including:

• those who completed a PhD and are now professionals in other fields,
• those who left PhD programs, or have had to take time out of their studies,
• contingent faculty,
• academics from marginalized groups,
• teachers, professors, and staff from all educational institutions,
• cultural resource management professionals, and
• independent scholars.

All scholars of the ancient world are welcomed and encouraged to submit a proposal for a paper or panel in the subject areas of Religion, Culture, or History of the Ancient Mediterrenean and Near East. Topics can range from the discussion of an academic paper to a discussion on the successes and struggles of teaching an ancient curriculum.

Theological Librarianship, an online, open access journal of Atla, invites submissions of original essays from graduate students. The winning essay will be published in the Fall 2021 issue. Essays should address topics that lie within the intersection of librarianship and religious and theological studies and that potentially impact libraries. Submissions are due no later than 1 June 2021.

We are pleased to announce the in-person portion of the dual 2021 Annual Meetings in San Antonio, Texas, November 20-23, is now open!  As previously announced, this year’s AAR & SBL meetings feature in-person sessions and limited virtual sessions. Our planning continues, and we anticipate opening registration for the virtual-only portion soon.

CUREMP Outstanding Mentor Award

The Underrepresented Racial and Ethnic Minorities in the Profession Committee (CUREMP) is in search of the recipient of the next Outstanding Mentor Award. CUREMP launched the award in 2020 to honor scholars of color who provide exceptional mentoring to other scholars by helping them to develop important professional networks and offering invaluable support in the process of navigating intricacies of the guild.
