Interestingly, the appearance of this article by Michael Fox appears, apparently coincidentally, at nearly the same time as an article by Paul Griffiths (U. of Chicago) in the Journal of the American Academy of Religion ('On the future of the Study of Religion in the Academy' JAAR 74.1 [2006]: 66-78), where the same issue is raised but very different conclusions drawn regarding the "neutral" study of religion. It would be interesting, and no doubt instructive, to ask Professor Fox to comment of Griffifths' essay, and even better if an on-line dialogue could be started between the two.
