These letters are in response to the article:Bare-legged and trouser-less: a part-timer and graduate student in Academia by Jeremiah Cataldo.

Response to Cataldo
Jeremiah Cataldo has it right! The quality of the work of those who teach part-time is often as good as, if not better than, those who teach full-time. But, absent more full-time jobs, that quality will, at best, eventually be diminished by the stress of always being one of the "part-time" workers, the ones without benefits when the health or family crisis hits. Who knows how much of value is lost when those who have the training and the ability to think well on subjects—and to teach others to also think well—finally throw in the towel and take an "ordinary" job, in order to stay alive?

Martha Bailey, Part-time Instructor in Portland, Oregon and Ph.D. Candidate, Claremont Graduate University
