On Monday, December 3, 2001 the Adam's Mark hotel chain agreed to pay $2million to settle the suit brought by five students who had charged a DaytonaBeach, Fla. Adam's Mark hotel with racial discrimination during the 1999 BlackCollege Reunion weekend. They have also agreed to drop a breach-of-contractagainst the Organization of American Historians, due to their withdrawal in 2000from a contract for their annual meeting.

According to the Chronicle of Higher Education, charges against thehotel included that black guests had to wear color-coded wristbands while at thehotel, were charged deposits for telephones, and were not allowed to renthigher-quality rooms.



Each of the five students in the case willreceive $20,000; other guests at the hotel that weekend will receive $1,000. Inaddition, scholarship money in the $100,000 to $250,000 range will be given tofour historically black colleges—Bethune-Cookman College, Edward WatersCollege, Florida A&M University, and Florida Memorial College—foreducation in hotel management. Approximately $1 million will go to lawyers'fees.
