New Awards

The Society of Biblical Literature is delighted to announce two new awards for SBL members: The Bernadette J. Brooten Award for Scholarship in Gender, Sexuality, and Embodiment and The Richards Award for Public Scholarship.

The Bernadette J. Brooten Award is sponsored by LGBTIQ+ Scholars and Scholarship and the Status of Women in the Profession Committee. The awards primary goal is to support and encourage early career researchers developing innovative approaches to the critical study of gender, sexuality, and/or embodiment in relation to biblical texts and traditions (broadly cast), especially with projects that foreground feminist, womanist, queer, and, or, as trans approaches.

The Richards Award honors members of the Society of Biblical Literature who have demonstrated excellence in public scholarship. It seeks to recognize the powerful role of sacred texts in society and how those texts shape culture.

Awards Open for Submissions

The SBL Travel Grant program application process is now open! The International Travel Awards offer opportunities to current SBL members outside North America to attend the Annual or International Meeting. Applications are due 15 Ferbuary 2022.

An ACLS webinar on K-12 Education

In December 2021, the American Council of Learned Societies hosted a webinar on K-12 education. This event not only provided attendees with resources for K-12 teaching, but also offered free consultations with Carey Sandoe associates, Liam Gluck and Sloane Meyer. SASA’s “Let’s Get Published” Work-in-Progress Forum

SASA’s “Let’s Get Published” Work-in-Progress Forum is a project of SASA’s Working Group on Independent Scholar Community Building, which began in the Fall of 2021 as an outgrowth of the Roundtables from our first annual Virtual Conference. These monthly informal gatherings are for Ancient Studies Independent Scholars and other researchers and students to present their recent research for direct feedback from an audience of like-minded scholars and students, and for the audience to engage with current research.

These hour-long meetings will be held in a closed Zoom session, available for free to anyone who RSVPs on SASA’s Events Page @ saveancientstudies.org/events.

In Memoriam Emanuel Hausman

We regret to inform you of the loss of Emanuel Hausman. Hausman was the founder and chairman of Carta Jerusalem Publishing House. Carta Jerusalem is prominent for biblical mapping and research. It is currently known for its publishing of high-quality biblical cartography. We express our sympathies to the family and friends of Emanuel Hausman.

In Memoriam Ralph W. Klein

We are sad to announce the passing of Dr. Ralph W. Klein. Dr. Klein was an influential member of Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago for nearly 40 years. During this time, he served in a number of positions including Professor and Dean. Learn more about the life of Dr. Ralph W. Klein.

In Memoriam Lois Roets

Sadly, we must report the passing of Lois Roets. In 2015, Lois Roets donated to SBL on behalf of her husband Philip Roets. The Philip G. and Lois F. Roets Endowment for the Bible and the Public Good was established and is used for the advancement of Bible Odyssey’s mission. We are thankful for the Roets’ contribution to the guild. We extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Lois and Philip Roets.

National Humanities Alliance Announces Awardees

The National Humanities Alliance recently announced the awardees of the $24.7 million grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities. This grant supports research in the humanities for 208 projects. Five SBL members were awarded this prestigious grant.
