Women in the Biblical World

Program Unit Type: Section
Accepting Papers? Yes

Call For Papers: The unit plans to have two open (accepting papers) and two invited sessions at the 2018 meeting. 1) A joint session with the Healthcare and Disability unit, we invite paper proposals that explore childbirth, menstruation, menopause, menarche, fertility, breastfeeding, and other concerns relating to the female reproductive system, with particular attention to the health, rather than the regulation of the female body in the biblical world and contemporary interpretation; 2) Hypermasculinity, Biblical Interpretation, and ‘A New Pharaoh’: this is a call for papers that investigate the intersection of (hyper)masculinity, biblical texts, political-religious discourse and literal and metaphorical violence against women; 3) A joint session with the LGBTI/Queer Hermeneutics unit, this is a panel of invited scholars, who will explore the intersections of womanist and LGBTI/Queer interpretations of the Bible in relation to the politics of respectability; 4) A joint session with the Feminist Hermeneutics of the Bible unit, this is a panel of invited scholars reviewing Wilda Gafney’s book Womanist Midrash: A Reintroduction to the Women of the Torah and the Throne (Westminster John Knox Press).
