Jesus Traditions, Gospels, and Negotiating the Roman Imperial World

Program Unit Type: Section
Accepting Papers? Yes

Call For Papers: This year we will have two sessions combining invited papers and an open call. For one of these sessions, we welcome papers focusing on New Testament evidence for the negotiation of subaltern or subject community identities vis-à-vis each other under the pressure of imperial hegemony. That is, what impact does Roman imperial ideology/practice have on Jewish communities' shifting allegiances and community boundaries in relation to each other or to Gentile communities? For the second session, we welcome papers on the relation of imperial rhetoric and practice to themes and topics in the gospels. https://webpages.scu.edu/ftp/cmurphy/sbl/jesus-traditions.
