Metacriticism of Biblical Scholarship

Program Unit Type: Section
Accepting Papers? Yes

Call For Papers: The Metacriticism of Biblical Scholarship section will hold three sessions at the 2018 Annual Meeting in Denver. Two of these will be open sessions and will actively solicit essays from scholars regardless of rank or disciplinary background. The third will be an invited panel addressing the topic of gender and the production of knowledge within the guild. Panelists will be invited to consider how intellectual work within biblical studies replicates gender hierarchies, and will be asked to address overtly sexist interpretive strategies (proof-texting, anachronistic appeals to the historical record, and the like), as well as implicit bias in the scholarship of those of us who seek to produce work that eschews sexism and the reproduction of inequality. The first open session will address the topic of biblical interpretation and contemporary politics. Submissions are encouraged to consider the intersection of academic biblical interpretation and contemporary configurations of political and economic power. We welcome papers that critically evaluate the impact of scholarly initiatives, journals, museums and archives, institutional or state sponsorship, or structures of patronage and mentoring. The second open session will address the cultural practice of "Bibles for" -- translations, commentary apparatuses, and packaging that overtly identifies an audience. "Bible" here can mean any biblical canon and translation, and "for X" any specified audience (age, gender, religious identity, familial statuses, etc.) We invite papers that examine the rhetoric, ideology, engagement with scholarship (or lack thereof) of such bibles, as well as cultural critiques of this genre. In addition to these three specific topics, the committee will also consider other paper proposals that fall within the unit's mission.
