Ritual in the Biblical World

Program Unit Type: Section
Accepting Papers? Yes

Call For Papers: The Ritual in the Biblical World section will offer three sessions in the upcoming 2019 annual meeting. 1) The first session is open for proposals on the topic of "Ritual and Epistemology", which will explore the relationship between ritual and knowledge (ritual as knowledge acquisition, how does one "know" in a ritual, ritual as didactic tool, etc.). 2) The second session will be an open session. We encourage those of you working on rituals in texts and iconography to consider proposing to this session which will offer a forum for discussing theory and methods in the field of ritual studies in the world of the Bible, i.e. OT/NT/DSS/ Christianity and Judaism in Late Antiquity. 3) The third session will be a book review with the Meals in the Greco-Roman world section. The books are: T & T Clark Handbook to Early Christian Meals (eds. Soham Al-Suadi, Peter-Ben Smith). The other is the Oxford Handbook of Early Christian Ritual (eds. Risto Uro et.al.). In particular, the review will note the similarities and differences between how a ritual lens shapes what one sees in meals and what one sees in rituals.
