Postcolonial Studies and Biblical Studies

Program Unit Type: Section
Accepting Papers? Yes

Call For Papers: Postcolonial Studies and Biblical Studies section will host four sessions for the 2019 Annual Meeting. We invite paper proposals for the first two sessions. The first session focuses on New Testament themes/texts that examine with lenses that reflect broadly construed postcolonial perspectives. The second session explores ideas that would shape a curriculum in biblical studies that is shaped by a postcolonial hermeneutic. The third session will be an invited panel titled "Talk back to the President" Troubled by the "SBL tradition" of not allowing questions and comments after an SBL President delivers her/his address, and by the tendency to wait for 15-30 years later to "look back" over the impacts of an SBL President's address, a panel of biblical scholars and theologians will respond and interrogate Brian Blount's 2018 presidential address (forthcoming in JBL, another SBL tradition) at the 2019 AAR & SBL annual meeting. The panel will highlight points that were helpful and encouraging in Blount's address, as well as points that were irritating and need further reflection and ongoing struggle. Blount will be invited to respond to the panel, and to reflect on how he might address some of his concerns differently one year later. The fourth session will be an invited panel in celebration of the 40th anniversary of its publication of Edward Said's Orientalism.
