Lived Religiousness in Antiquity

Program Unit Type: Section
Accepting Papers? Yes

Call For Papers: One session in 2019 will focus on "Lived Religiousness and Salience." How salient were concepts like “being Christian” or “being Jewish” in the daily lives of actual people in the early centuries CE? Presenters will write first-person narratives from the perspective of an ancient person living in a context that features in their research, e.g., “a week in the life of a female domestic slave in first-century Corinth who (sometimes) participates in assembly gatherings.” In addition to the first-person narrative, presenters should formulate methodological theses relating to the larger theme of lived religiousness and salience in daily life. Proposals are invited for this session, and should include a clear description of the first-person subject of your narrative (cf. example above), as well as an indication of the sorts of sources on which your account might be based. Creativity is encouraged.
