Requirements for Participation

Exile (Forced Migrations) in Biblical Literature

Program Unit Type: Seminar
Accepting Papers? Yes

Call For Papers: This year we will offer three sessions, in addition to a joint session with the Assyriology and the Bible section. 1. We invite papers for a session investigating methodological issues around forced migrations in antiquity. Especially welcome are papers exploring such topics as differences between exile and forced migration, the relationship between exile as a state of mind and exile inside and outside the homeland, among others. 2. We invite papers examining texts and other data concerning exile/forced migration of the deity in ancient texts, including the Hebrew Bible and other ancient Near Eastern texts, but not limited to them. This theme may extend well beyond the period of the Hebrew Bible into Jewish reflections on the tzimtzum or early Christian notions that eventually became identified as Gnostic. 3. We invite papers for a session probing the theme of return as a site of theological reflection within texts in the Hebrew Bible and other relevant corpora. 4. We are co-hosting a session with Assyriology and the Bible. It is a closed review session of Cornelia Wunsch's book "Judaeans by the Waters of Babylon."
