Program Unit Type: Section
Accepting Papers? Yes

Call For Papers: We are inviting proposals for two sessions: First is an open session for which we are inviting papers focusing on two broad topics: 1) teaching the Bible in the context of the Critical Race Theory (CRT) ban and 2) the ways in which digital media--Twitter, ChatGPT, etc--impacts the classroom experience and shapes pedagogical approaches. The second is a themed session on the Bible and Critical Race Theory that we are co-sponsoring with the Metacriticism unit. Critical Race Theory (CRT) continues to be under fire in the public square. Opponents claim that university students are being indoctrinated under the banner of CRT and fed a distorted version of American history. How should the critical Bible scholar respond? We invite proposals for papers that address how, and why, biblical scholars should take the debate over CRT seriously in their research and pedagogy. Topics may include: competing definitions of Critical Race Theory; historical concepts of race in philosophical and religious scholarship; the role of racialized ideas, language, and methods in biblical scholarship; the construct of Whiteness in contemporary institutional settings for the study of the Bible; and how racism inflects biblical scholarship offered to different audiences (the public, students, colleagues).
