Animal Studies and the Bible

Program Unit Type: Consultation
Accepting Papers? Yes

Call For Papers: This unit seeks to make the insights of animal studies available to biblical scholars by promoting interdisciplinary and intersectional analysis of biblical animals, animality, and the ethics of human relationships with other animals. For 2019, we are planning at least two sessions: an open session and a joint session with the Ecological Hermeneutics section. For the open session, we seek paper proposals on one or more of the many animals that appear in the Bible. Proposals may make use of insights from various fields, including zooarchaeology, iconography, natural history, biology, anthropology, history, philosophy, literature, and ethics. They may explore the intersections of animals in the biblical text with issues of gender, race, colonialism, ecology, and disability. For the joint session with Ecological Hermeneutics, we seek paper proposals on wildlife depletion then and now, including issues associated with species extinctions and destruction of habitat in the biblical period and their relevance for modern times. The consultation plans an edited volume, and papers from these sessions may be considered for publication.
