Call For Papers: In Tartu, the Mind, Society, and Tradition unit will be organizing three sessions. The theme of the first session is "Ritual Approaches to the Biblical World." There is a growing interest in the use of ritual theories and approaches among biblical scholars. The study of rituals provides scholars with a tool to understand and explain biblical texts and the religious world of Ancient Israel, Second Temple Judaism and early Christianity. In recent years, ritual theorists have reevaluated the classical anthropological theories of ritual and attempted to organize the existing knowledge about ritual behavior in a new field called "ritual studies." Moreover, cognitive and evolutionary scientists have advanced a number of new theories focusing on the cognitive constrains of ritual actions and the (assumed) adaptive value of ritual behavior. We invite papers that reflect on the use and the value of ritual theories and approaches in the study of biblical and cognate materials. For the second session, we are inviting proposals dealing with social-scientific and/or cognitive approaches in the study of biblical texts and traditions, as stated in the description of the program unit. The third session will be a prearranged review session.
