Bible and Its Influence: History and Impact

Program Unit Type: Section
Accepting Papers? Yes

Call For Papers: This unit seeks to explore the use and impact of biblical texts in either a contemporary or historical context. Preference is given to papers that show, either by specific example or wider-ranging theory, how the biblical text has helped to shape the way in which individuals, religious communities or even whole societies have acted and/or reflected upon their place in the world. Papers in this unit normally seek to explore the use and influence of the biblical text outside of a strictly biblically-academic context. ‘How', for example, ‘has the Bible been used in debates over homosexuality outside of the academy’? ‘What use has been made of the biblical texts in advertising’? ‘What is the relationship between biblical prohibitions on the intake of blood and the position taken on this issue by the Jehovah’s Witnesses’? Papers that take up the use made of the Bible in art, literature, film or music are also encouraged.
