Qumran and the Dead Sea Scrolls

Program Unit Type: Section
Accepting Papers? Yes

Call For Papers: The seminar on the Dead Sea Scrolls and the Hebrew Bible tries to bring the importance of the Dead Sea Scrolls for the interpretation of the Hebrew Bible to the attention of a broader scholarly public. For the Edinburgh meeting in 2006, we want to focus on the question of “Prophecy and the Dead Sea Scrolls”. Although, with the possible exception of the Teacher of Righteousness, the Dead Sea Scrolls do not attest to active prophecy, prophetic texts are significant in the Qumran collection. Most of the Qumran pesharim are commentaries on prophetic books, and several paratextual Dead Sea Scrolls are dedicated to prophets. This seminar will ask in how far the Qumran evidence continues or discontinues prophetic traditions from ancient Israel and Judah and how the Qumran evidence relates to prophecy and divination practiced in the ANE and the Graeco-Roman environment of ancient Israel. The majority of the papers are by invitation only; there will be, however, also an open session for papers dealing with Dead Sea Scrolls and the Hebrew Bible.
