The Edinburgh sessions will continue to respond to issues from the perspective of individuals in graduate education as well as departmental/program issues. Who determines that the exams are passed? In what way is critical hermeneutical and methodological knowledge demonstrated and evaluated? Is literacy in new areas of studies from different social locations required? 3) DISSERTATION - What are the purposes of the dissertation? How are topics of research and areas of inquiry selected? How are dissertation advisors selected? How much responsibility is demanded in regard to using diverse methods and understanding the methodological pluriformity of the field? Is it possible to write several extensive research papers instead of a dissertation? What is the approval process? What are the standards of excellence? How much are inter- and transdisciplinary dissertations encouraged?
