Biblical Characters in Three Traditions (Judaism, Christianity, Islam)

Program Unit Type: Seminar
Accepting Papers? No

Call For Papers: Theme for 2006: Elijah and Elisha: "Let a Double Portion of Thy Spirit be Upon Me."
It is the task of the prophet to listen to the voice of God. This voice came to the prophet in a different form. In the Elijah narratives it came in the form of rain, which appeared right after Elijah's encounter with the prophet of Ba'al. The rain is representing and proclaiming God's forgiveness. According to the Biblical text God had caused the drought in Israel because of the Israelites' inclusion of the foreign and forbidden cult of Ba'al within their religious and cultural traditions. Although the Biblical storyteller emphasizes the greatness of YHWH, Josephus presents a different tradition. Is his tradition to be accepted as a reliable one?

Our task in this seminar is to examine the complicated sources presented in the three religious traditions and in literature and to try to answer the following questions:

  • Why is Elijah such a revered character in the three religious traditions (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam?)
  • Why did Elijah become a favorite hero who overshadowed the Biblical story of murdering 450 prophets and killing 100 soldiers?
  • When did the stories first appear depicting Elijah as a favorite hero?
