Critical Theory and Biblical Interpretation

Program Unit Type: Section
Accepting Papers? Yes

Call For Papers: Biblical Interpretation today is characterized by a variety of different concerns and approaches. The focus of this programme unit is on the use of critical theory in Early Christian Studies, broadly conceived. Its scope includes analysis of the biblical texts and contexts, questions of method and theory, and attention to interpretations- interpreters and their contexts. Papers are welcome from such perspectives as postcolonial studies, gender studies, economic studies, racial-ethnic studies, and queer studies. At the 2010 Meeting in Tartu, Estonia, the unit will focus on three research projects. Two of these are directly related to the particular location of the conference venue. First, in conjunction with the EABS and its research program on the “The Bible in the 21st Century,” we will sponsor joint sessions on the theme of “The Politics of Hybridity: Mis/using the Bible.” This project will address the theme of hybridity in the interpretation and use of the Bible, with a primary focus on the concepts of memory and territoriality. Papers that address these concepts under the broad rubric of hybridity and biblical interpretation are invited. Second, we will pursue the theme of the biblical critic as a postcolonial critic. This project will focus on the meaning and ramifications of identity and practice as a postcolonial critic. Papers in dialogue with postcolonial discourse, empire studies, international relations studies, subaltern studies, and related methodological-theoretical approaches will be particularly welcomed. Lastly, in conjunction with a publication project under the auspices of Semeia Studies entitled “The Future of the Biblical Past,” we will offer a session on visions of doing and teaching biblical criticism in the future. Papers will be given by contributors to the volume, alongside a report on the project. Proposals for papers should be submitted through the on-line system; inquiries should be directed to the programme unit chairs.
