Expressions of Religion in Israel

Program Unit Type: Section
Accepting Papers? Yes

Call For Papers: For 2010, “Religious Expressions in Israel” seeks papers dealing with the expressions of the religions (re)presented in the Tanakh that have both advocates and critics. The conflict may concern disagreements over "traditional" practices putatively supported by ancient and widely accepted laws. At issue may be disagreement over the proper/improper observance of such religious expressions. On another front conflict appears to be caused by what the biblical writer(s) perceive(s) as unacceptable innovation--whether of foreign or domestic origin. Methods of delineating these conflicts (debates, if you will) are numerous, and include textual, archaeological, gender, art historical, comparative religious, and ethnographic approaches. Abstracts indicating interest in moving beyond the standard dichotomies (priest/lay, empowered/powerless, native/foreigner, D(tr)/P, etc.) when portraying the advocates and critics of these practices are encouraged. Abstracts in English, French, and German are welcome.
